Modular Hanging Nightstand

School Project (ES1310, WPI)

Main Softwares Used;

SolidWorks

Date Completed
March 2023

Worked in a team of four to design a "hanging nightstand" product which attaches to bed frames and can be disassembled for easy storage. The nightstand is customizable for different drawer and shelf arrangements.

Combined the nightstand components into a SolidWorks assembly, using limit mates to imitate the sliding shelves, and created a 2 minute SolidWorks animation to showcase functionality of the product.

Pictured at the right are initial sketches of the design.

The original idea was to have 3 shelves.

However, we decided to make the arrangement of shelves and drawers adjustable, and were able to do so using small ridges along the interior of the frame for the design (more details shown below)

Engineering drawings were made for each part as well as the final assembly.

Clearance fits were used when considering tolerances for the drawers fitting into the frame.

Interference fits were specified for fitting different elements of the frame together.

Nightstand in Various Configurations:

Show to the left is a rendering of the nightstand attached underneath a bed. This specific configuration uses two drawers and a pull-out shelf.
